Lance Corporal Albert Jeffrey

poppyLance Corporal Albert Jeffrey was born in Littleworth in 1898, the son of local Police Constable John Jeffrey and his wife Mary.  Sometime later the family moved to Gorsemoor Road, Heath Hayes.

Albert was employed as a miner at the Mid-Cannock Colliery and when war broke out, he enlisted with the 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards.  He was sadly killed in action on 31st July 1917.

In a poignant letter to his grieving family, his Superior Officer wrote ‘Albert was without exaggeration the cheeriest and most dependable man in my platoon – stalwart, upright and a lovable character’.

Albert is commemorated on the Heath Hayes War Memorial and on the Menin Gate of the Ypres memorial in France.
