Private Arnold Smith

poppyPrivate Arnold Smith was born in 1895, the son of William & Harriett Smith of Great Wyrley.  

The family later moved to Bank Street, Heath Hayes and Arnold found work as a ‘lathe labourer’ at the Coppice Colliery (known locally as the ‘Fair Lady’).

He went on to enlist with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards but was killed in action on 25th September 1916.  (His brother John died the following year).

Arnold is commemorated on the Heath Hayes War Memorial and on the Thiepval Memorial in France.
