Lance Corporal Walter Evans

poppyLance Corporal Walter Evans was born in Barrow-in-Furness in 1885 – another son of David and Ellen Evans and elder brother of the aforementioned Samuel Evans.

Walter was also employed as a coal miner and lived with his family on Hednesford Road, Heath Hayes.  He had previously joined the Staffordshire Militia and volunteered for service during the Boer War.

Walter enlisted with the Hednesford Territorial’s when war broke out and was later transferred  to the 1st/5th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. 

Walter was killed in action on 13th October 1915.  He is commemorated on the Heath Hayes War Memorial and the Loos Memorial in France.
