Lance Corporal John Bernard Smith

poppyLance Corporal John Smith was born in 1897, the son of William & Harriett Smith, who at the time lived in Great Wyrley.  (John was the younger brother of the aforementioned Private Arnold Smith).

Before the outbreak of war, John was employed in the local coal mining industry.  

He went on to enlist with the 6th Battalion King Shropshire’s Regiment but died on 20th June 1917.

He was buried at the Favreuil British cemetery in France and is commemorated on the Heath Hayes War Memorial.
