Private John Gwyther

poppyPrivate John Gwyther was born in Leeds in 1875, another son of local school teachers William & Louisa Gwyther and elder brother of the aforementioned Edwin.

In 1911 John was recorded as a soldier, stationed at Whittington Barracks, near Lichfield. ┬áBy this time he had already served over 15 years in the Army and held the King and Queen’s medals for his service during the Boer War.

John was killed in action on 29th October 1914 – the first Heath Hayes man to lose his life in the conflict.

He is commemorated on the Heath Hayes War Memorial and on the Menin Gate of the Ypres Memorial in France.
