Private Samuel Evans

poppyPrivate Samuel Evans was born in 1896, the son of David & Ellen Evans of Barrow-in-Furness.  The family appear to have moved to Hednesford Road, Heath Hayes around 1910.

The 1911 census records Samuel as a 15 year old boy, working as a coal miner and in charge of a pit pony.

When war broke out, Samuel enlisted with the Hednesford Territorial’s and later transferred to the 10th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment.

In 1915 his brother Walter, was killed in action and sadly twelve months later on 31st October 1916, Samuel died too.

Samuel is commemorated on the Heath Hayes War Memorial and on the Thiepval Memorial in France.
