Before the outbreak of war, Rifleman A.P Watkins lived in Cleeton Street, Heath Hayes. He enlisted with the King’s Royal Rifles in April 1915 and in June that year was sent to Salonika, where is served in the Struma Valley. In 1916 he became ill with Malaria and was sent to Malta for several months to convalesce. He was later sent back to England, where he was treated at hospital in Liverpool but was considered unfit for active duty – he was discharged in May 1917. He received the General Service and Victory Medals.
