Sapper C Cowley lived in Cleeton Street, Heath Hayes. He enlisted with the Royal Engineers in August 1915 and in November was sent to France. He worked alongside a Tunnelling Company who were digging ‘under Sanctuary Wood’ near Ypres. He was later sent to Vimy Ridge in Northern France where he was injured. Upon recovery he was sent to the Somme, where once again helped to dig trenches and dugouts. He was discharged in February 1919. He holds the 1914-15 Star, General Service and Victory Medals.
